In the Quran it is stated that there are some human beings who belong to the group of heretics. So, what are the criteria for heretics mentioned in the Quran?
Allah Almighty said:
“˹They are˺ the ones who favour the life of this world over the Hereafter and hinder ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah, striving to make it ˹appear˺ crooked. It is they who have gone far astray.”(Quran Surah Ibrahim: 3)
In the explanation of this verse, it is mentioned that Allah Almighty explains, people who prefer the earthly life to the ukhrawi life, deter others from the way of Allah, and desire that people stay away from the straight path that Allah has given to man, they are heretical as far as possible.
Criteria for heretics mentioned in the Quran
So, the criteria for a heretic as mentioned in the interpretation of Quran Chapter Ibrahim verse 3 are:
1. People who prefer the earthly life to the ukhrawi life.
2. Those who deter others from the ways of God.
3. Those who want people to stay away from the straight path that God has given to man.
In this regard, the Quran reminds us that various worldly affairs should not neglect us from preparing for ukhrawi life. However, that earthly life must also not be ignored at all, as God says.

“Rather, seek the ˹reward˺ of the Hereafter by means of what Allah has granted you, without forgetting your share of this world. And be good ˹to others˺ as Allah has been good to you. Do not seek to spread corruption in the land, for Allah certainly does not like the corruptors.” (QS al-Qashash: 77)
The infidels not only deny the Quran, but also hinder others from following the right path. They prevent people from knowing the teachings of Islam and make it a guide to life. Thus, they are perverted people and seek to mislead others, so their crimes multiply.
They also tried with various deceptions to make the straight path shown by God crooked. They exchanged God’s verses for what suited their lustful will and evil intentions. Thus, then the mistakes they made become multiplied again. Naturally, they were inflicted with the wrath of God because they were heretics and infidels.
