5 Functions of the Quran for Mankind

The Quran is the kalam(word) of Allah SWT which is intended for the Prophet Muhammad SAW to be conveyed to his people in order to achieve good benefits both for the life in the world and the hereafter.

Thus, the Quran is not only used by the people of the Prophet Muhammad, but the Quran can be a guide for all mankind.

In the Quran there are dozens of verses that explain the urgency of the function of the Qur’an for mankind. From these verses, it can be detailed that the functions of the Quran are as follows :

1) Hudan (guidance for mankind)

The function as a clue is mentioned in the Qur’an more than 79 verses, as in surah al-Baqarah (2): 2

This Book has no doubt about it, a guidance for those who are godfearing.

2) Bayyinah

This can be seen as in the letter al-Baqarah (2): 185

3) Tibyan (an explanation of all things that Allah has said)

In al-Nahl (16): 89 Allah says:

On the Day when We shall raise up in every nation a witness against them from among themselves, and Bring you as a witness against all mankind. And We have sent down unto thee the Book, explaining all things, and guidance and mercy, and glad tidings to those who put their trust.

4) Tafshil (give a detailed explanation so that it can be done according to what Allah wants)

This is explained in sura Yusuf (12): 111,

The functions of the Qur’an mentioned earlier do not necessarily function automatically for Muslims.

In a sense, these functions can be meaningful to us if we really make the Qur’an in harmony with the understanding and practice of the contents of the Qur’an well.

The better one’s understanding and awareness of the content of the Qur’an, the clearer and more proven the functions of the Qur’an for that person.

On the other hand, if one cannot understand the Qur’an and there is no willingness to practice its contents, then those functions will only be attached to the Qur’an itself and have no effect on that person.

Therefore, in order for the functions of the Qur’an to be clear, we must continue to try to understand the Qur’an to the maximum and best and supported by our awareness to always practice its content, especially in our daily lives.
