5 Hadith about The Very Beautiful Love

Man is a being who is endowed by God جل جلاله with love. The Messenger of Allah himself, as our tauladan, left many hadith about love that are very beautiful.

It is this love that moves a servant to carry out activities in daily life, as said by Shaikhul islam Ibn Taimiyyah:

“For all deeds and movements that exist in nature come from love and desire”, love is the basis of every deed and its beginning.” (Qaidah fil mahabbah p. 7).

Therefore, Islam does not prohibit love in humans, but islam directs that love brings happiness not misery. Many hadith of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم discuss love, including:

Hadith on Love: Love for Allah جل جلاله is the pinnacle of love.

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

ثلاث من كن فيه وجد حلاوة الإيمان من كان اللّه ورسوله أحب إليه مما سواهما ومن أحب عبدا لا يحبه إلا للّه ومن يكره أن يعود في الكفر بعد إذ أنقذه اللّه كما يكره أن يلقى في النار

“Three things that if there is in a person, then he will taste the sweetness of faith: his love for Allah and the apostle is far greater than love for other than him, he does not love someone except because of Allah, he hates returning to obscurity after Allah saves himself as he does not like to be cast into fire.” (HR. Bukhari : 16, Muslim : 43).

Nothing trumps the magnitude of Allah’s love for His servant.

Once the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw a woman confused looking for her baby son, then the Messenger of Allah صلى اللله عليه وسلم said to his companions:

أتُرَوْنَ هذِه طَارِحَةً ولَدَهَا في النَّارِ؟

“Do you think this mother is willing to dump her child into the fire?”

The companions also replied:

لَا، وهي تَقْدِرُ علَى أنْ لا تَطْرَحَهُ

“No, he won’t have the heart to do that.”

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم also said:

لَلَّهُ أرْحَمُ بعِبَادِهِ مِن هذِه بوَلَدِهَا

“Verily the affection of Allah جل جلاله to His servant is much greater than that of the mother to her child”. (HR. Bukhari : 5999).

Love for the messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم should take precedence over others.

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى أكون أحب إليه من ولده ووالده والناس أجمعين

“There is no faith in any one of you until I love him more than his son, his parents, and all men.” (HR. Bukhari : 32. Muslims: 33).

One day Umar ibn Khattab radhiyallahu ‘anhu said to the messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

يا رسول الله! لأنت أحب إلي من كل شيء إلا من نفسي

“Duhai messenger of allah, you are more loved by me than anything but me.”

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

لا، والذي نفسي بيده، حتى أكون أحب إليك من نفسك

“No, for the sake of Dzat whose soul is in His hands, until I love you more even than yourself.”

So Umar replied:

“By Allah, Verily now you love you more even than myself”.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم also said:

الآن يا عمر

“Now yes Umar (Your faith is perfect).” (HR. Bukhari : 6632).

Hadith on Love: Loving the faithful is one of the keys to going to heaven.

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

والذي نفسي بيده، لا تَدْخلوا الجنة حتى تُؤْمنوا، ولا تؤمنوا حتى تحابُّوا، أوَلا أدلُّكم على شيء إذا فعلتموه تحاببتم؟ أفشوا السلام بينكم

“For the sake of Dzat whose soul is in His hands, you will not go to heaven until you have faith, and you do not have faith until you love each other. Will you I show you how to get you to love each other? spread greetings among you.” (HR. Muslims : 54).

Love companion رضي الله عنهم is a sign of faith.

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

آيَةُ الإيمانِ حُبُّ الأنْصارِ، وآيَةُ النِّفاقِ بُغْضُ الأنْصارِ

“The sign of faith is to love the people of Anshar (companions of the prophet who waited for the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and Muhajirin in Medina), while hating them is a sign of hypocrisy.” (HR. Bukhari : 3784).

Hadith on Love: Loving kindness for brothers and sisters is a sign of perfection of faith.

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

لا يؤمن أحَدُكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحبُّ لنفسه

“Do not believe in any one of you until he loves for his brother a kindness that he loves for himself.” (HR. Bukhari : 13).

Those are some of the hadith of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that talk about love. The basis of a Muslim’s love is to love Allah جل جلاله, it is above the love for Allah that a Muslim should build his love for others. A Muslim will love everything that Allah loves, and will hate everything that is forbidden by Allah جل جلاله.
