Asy-Shaykh Abdurrahman bin Abdul Aziz bin Muhammad as-Sudais or better known as Abdurrahman as-Sudais is the Imam and Khatib of the Grand Mosque who also serves as The General Chairman of the Board of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
In 2005, he was awarded the 2005 Muslim Prize of the Dubai International Qur’an Award for his services in the fields of the Quran and Islam.
His birthplace is more precisely in the city of al-Bukairiyah, which is currently in Qasim Province. He became imam and khatib of the Grand Mosque since 1404 H, first became imam of ashar prayer on 22 Sha’ban 1404 H and first delivered the sermon on 15 Ramadan 1404 H.
Education of Shaykh Sudais (Imam of the Grand Mosque)
He spent his childhood in Riyadh, then he completed his primary education at al-Mutsanna bin Harithah Elementary School, then he entered Ma’had ‘Ilmi (Vocational High School) Riyadh.
He had memorized the Qur’an at the age of 12, and memorized the Qur’an from many teachers in Riyadh with the guidance of Shaykh Abdurrahman bin Abdullah Alu Faryan, both of his parents thanked the teachers who had taught as-Sudais.
He also learned from Shaykh al-Muqri Muhammad Abdul Majid Dzakir and Shaykh Muhammad Ali Hasan. And graduated from the school by reading the Qur’an using qira’at Hafs from Ashim in 1979/1399 H with a very good predicate, then he continued his studies to a higher level.
In 1408 H he completed his master’s studies with the title Laude from Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, Faculty of Shari’ah Department of Ushul Fiqh.
Then he completed his doctoral studies at um Al-Qura University with the title Laude, then his dissertation entitled Study and Research Kitab al-Wadhih fi Ushulul Fiqh by Abu al-Wafa bin ‘Aqil al-Hanbali was printed in 1416 H.
In writing his dissertation he was guided by Prof. Ahmad Fahmi Abu Sanah, and his dissertation session was led by Dr. Abdullah bin Abdul Muhsin at-Turki, Secretary General Rabithah al-‘Alam al-Islami and Dr. Ali bin Abbas al-Hakami, Graduate Director of the Faculty of Shari’ah um Al-Qura University.
He obtained the title of Professor of Ushul Fiqh for his research with the title Ushul Fiqh Problem related to the syar’i propositions contested by Ibn Qudamah al-‘Azali.
