Muslim scientist: Abu Raihan Abu Raihan Al-Biruni

Abu Raihan Al-Biruni was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, physicist, scholar, encyclopedia writer, philosopher, wanderer, historian, geographer, pharmacist and teacher, who contributed much to mathematics, philosophy, medicine.

Abu Raihan Al-Biruni was born in Khawarazmi, Turkmenistan or Khiva in the Lake Aral region of Central Asia which at that time was located in the Persian empire. He studied mathematics and star studies from Abu Nashr Mansur.

Abu Raihan Al-Biruni was a friend of the philosopher and medicine expert Abu Ali Al-Hussain Ibn Abdallah Ibn Sina/Ibn Sina, historian, philosopher, and ethicist ibn Miskawaih, at the university and science center founded by Abu Al Abbas’s son Ma’mun Khawarazmshah.

Abu Raihan Al-Biruni also traveled to India with Mahmud of Ghazni and accompanied him in his military there, studying their language, philosophy and religion and writing books on him. He also speaks several languages including Greek, Syrian, and Berber, Sanskrit.

The Works

Al-Biruni wrote many books in Persian (his native language) and Arabic. Here is Al-Biruni’s work:

1) When he was 17 years old, he examined the latitude for Kath, Khwarazm, using the sun’s maximum altitude.

2) When he was 22, he wrote several brief works, including a map projection study, “Cartography”, which included a methodology for making hemisphere projections on flat fields.

3) When he was 27, he had written a book called “Chronology” which referred to other works produced by him (now no longer) including a book on astrolabes, a book on the decimal system, 4 books on the study of stars, and 2 books on history.

4) He made research on the radius of the Earth worth 6,339.6 kilometers (this result was repeated in the West in the 16th century).

5) Al-Biruni wrote a book with a number exceeding 120 books on: Theoretical and practical arithmetic, rule of number 3, irrational numbers, algebraic definitions, geometry, triangular angles, and many more
