Law of Wearing Softlens for Muslim

Softlens or eye lenses themselves are corrective, cosmetic, or therapeutic lenses that are usually placed in the cornea of the eye. Contact lenses usually have the same uses as conventional glasses or regular glasses, but are lighter and less noticeable in shape when worn.

Eyepieces or softlens are indeed trending and very popular. For women, these contact lenses are considered to be able to beautify the appearance.

The purpose of wearing softlens or contact lenses itself is actually quite diverse. There are those who use it as a practical tool in place of glasses. There are also those who use it just to add beauty to the eyeballs as well as a lifestyle or follow trends such as anime cosplay.

Shaikh Ibn Al-Utsaimin in his book ‘Taujihat lil Mu’minat’, explains the legal problem of wearing these softlenss as follows:

The use of softlens should be consulted with the doctor. From a medical point of view, the use of softlens does need to be consulted with a doctor. Does its use have a negative effect on the eyes or not?

If it causes a negative effect, then it should not be worn because there is a danger to the eyes or vision. According to Shaikh Al Utsaimin, any harm that can harm the body is forbidden. This is based on the word of Allah Ta’ala :

” “(QS An-Nisa : 29)

However, if the doctor decides that the lens of the eye has no negative effect and does not harm the eye, then we should consider it once again. Does the lens make the eyes of the woman wearing them look like star eyes?

Examples are similar to goat eyes or rabbit eyes. If so, then the use of this contact lens is also not allowed. The issue of resemblance to this animal is expressed in the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah only in the sense of reproach and command to stay away from it. Thus, its meaning becomes prohibition (nahi).

In essence, if the lens makes the eyes appear similar to the eyes of an animal, then it is illegitimate to wear them.

But if it doesn’t change the eyes, but rather just the color of the eyes from deep black to less black or other colors, then it doesn’t matter. And it does not belong to the category of changing the nature of God’s creation, because the lens of the eye is not permanent so it cannot be confused with a tattoo. At any time, the lens can be removed.

The lens is more similar to the glasses although it is clearly separated from the eye compared to the lens attached to the eye. But whatever the circumstances, if the woman does not use it then it is better, more mainstream and safer for her own eyes from harm.

So, the law of wearing softlens can be allowed as well as not allowed. The important thing is, when you want to wear it, it must be carefully considered as explained above.

Shaikh Shalih bin Fauzan hafizhahullah argued, about the law of wearing these colored eyepieces, the answer is to wear eye lenses because there is a need for no problem. But if there is no need, then it is better not to wear it, especially if it is very expensive, since its use can be considered israf (excess) that is forbidden.
