The tower is thought to have been inspired directly by The Qutub Minar in Delhi, which was also built by the Ghurid Dynasty. After Qutub Minar in Delhi, India, the Clock Tower is the second tallest brick tower in the world.

The Minaret of The Hour is one of about 60 towers built between the 11th and 13th centuries in Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan, from the Kutlug East Tower in Old Urgench (considered the tallest and still present) to the tower at Ghazni.

These towers are thought to have been built as symbols of Islamic victory, while other towers are only landmarks or watchtowers.
