Social Media ethics (Adab) in Islamic View

Social media is a means by which users can easily participate, share, and create content including blogs, social networks, wikis, forums and virtual worlds.

Social media invites anyone interested in participating by publicly contributing and feedback, commenting and sharing information in a fast and unlimited time.

there are several ethics (adab) in social media according to Islamic views:

Tabayyun (check and ricek)

In (QS. Al-Hujurat [49]:6) mentions how ethics and ordinances deal with a news that we receive, as follows:

And if a wicked person comes to you with a news story, then examine it carefully so that you do not inflict harm on a people without knowing what is wrong.”

there are two things that can be considered related to the verse. First, tabayyun against the news bearer whether the fasiq (person whose activity is tinged with violation of religion).
Second, it concerns the content of the news that there needs to be an investigation of the truth of a news story.

Islam does not condone the existence of news sharing without conducting an in-depth investigation of validity.

Convey information correctly in Social Media

Islam teaches honest opinions and is based on evidence and facts and is expressed sincerely. Do not spread information that is not yet known the truth on social media. The term is called qaul zur which means bad word or false testimony.

The Word of Allah SWT:

Haram spread slander, hatred, and others in Social Media

  •  Doing ghibah; slander, namimah; and spread hostility. Bullying, hate speech, and hostility based on ethnicity, race. or between groups.
  • Spreading hoaxes and false information even with good intentions, such as info about the death of a living person
  • Disseminating pornographic material, sin, and anything that is shari’a prohibited

Social media is used to warn ma’ruf nahi munkar that guarantees and regulates freedom of expression.

Freedom of speech is the right of every human being. However, opinions are often misused to create slander, false opinions, and spread hatred that is often expressed through social media.

Allah SWT asks that every human being defend what is right, as presented in the following surah:

And let there be among you a community that calls to good, enjoins good and forbids evil. they are the successful.” Qs. Ali Imran:104)

Manners of Eating and Drinking in Islam

Not used to make fun of others

Social media is not used to make fun of others, as conveyed in the word of Allah SWT:

Prohibition of spreading hatred and fake news in Social Media

In (QS. An-Nur [24]:4) Allah SWT forbids to spread hatred and make fake news:
