Tomb of Baqi’ Al-gharqad: Main Cemetery in Medina

Baqi’ al-Gharqad was a graveyard from jahiliyah until now. Pilgrims who died in Medina are buried in Baqi’, located to the east of the Prophet’s Mosque.

In that place was buried Usman bin Affan Ra. (Caliph III), and the wives of the Prophet Muhammad, namely Siti Aisyah Ra., Ummi Salamah Ra., Juwairiyah Ra., Zainab Ra., Hafsah bint Umar bin al-Khattab Ra. And Mariyah al-Qibtiyah Ra. The sons and daughters of the Prophet (peace be upon him) include Ibrahim, Siti Fatimah, Um Kulsum.

Jannatul-Baqī’ is the main cemetery located in Medina, Saudi Arabia, opposite the Prophet’s Mosque where the Prophet Muhammad was buried. In this cemetery there are many families and friends of the Prophet Muhammad buried.

Jannatul-Baqī’ means Garden of Heaven, also known as Baqī’ al-Gharqad. Baqī’ means the land where the roots of different trees are planted and al-Garqhad is the name of a thorny tree (Boxthorn) that is abundant in Baqi’. This tree is a species of Lycium shawii (Arabic: Alaosaj) species of Boxthorn.

Similarly, Ruqayya Halimatus Sa’diyah the mother of the Milk of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The first companions buried in Baqi’ were Abu Umamah, Hasan bin Zararah of the Ansarshars and Usman bin Maz’un of the Muhajirin.

Known as Baqi’ al-Gharqad because here long ago grew Gharqad trees (Gharqad trees / a type of small leafy and thorny trees).

1) The wives of the Prophet, also known as Ummahatul Mu’minin (Mother of the faithful) include Aisha, Hafsah and Saudah. The two wives who are not buried here are Khadijah bint Khuwaylid who is buried in Makkah and Maimunah bint al-Harith who is buried in Sarif.
2) The daughters of the Prophet; Fatimah az-Zahra, Ruqayyah, Zainab, Ummi Kultsum
3) Ibrahim, infant son of the Prophet of Mariatul Qibthiyah
4) Hasan bin Ali, grandson of the Prophet
