Quran is a kalam Allah delivered to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. If today we can read it in the form of a written book, then this condition is very different when it is still the time of the Apostle.
Each verse written on the palm fronds, stone plates, bones and other traditional media. After the Prophet died, many companions died so Umar ibn Khattab asked Abu Bakr as caliph at that time so that the Quran was collected.
However, although written in various objects, the sanctity and purity of the Qur’an is maintained until now. So why at that time the Mushaf Al-Quran was not written on the paper as it is today?
1. At that time the Verse of the Quran Was Not Finished Revealed
The first reason not written mushaf Quran on paper at the time of the Prophet is because at that time not all verses of the Qur’an was revealed by Allah SWT to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Verses of the Qur’an that came down only pieces not at once.
For example, in one surah, the verses are still cut into pieces and revealed randomly. Sometimes there are verses on the front that come down later and vice versa.
Therefore, at that time it relied more on hapalan than writing. This is also supported by the memory of rasullullah’s friends who are very strong. In addition, at that time people who were good at reading rare writing and limited stationery.
Therefore, when a friend hears a verse, they immediately memorize it and write it on palm fronds, sheets of skin, thin white stones and shoulder bones (animals).
As for the hadith that corroborates that the writing of the Qur’an has occurred at the time of the Messenger of Allah is a hadith in Takhrij (issued) by the Al-Hakim with his sanad that continues to Anas, he said: “One time we are with the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. and we write the Qur’an (collecting) on the skin of animals.”
2. Paper is hard to find and Expensive
The existence of paper already existed in the time of the Prophet. But paper isn’t the only means available and something that’s hard to come by. In addition, the price of paper is also not as cheap as it is today. That is why paper is not used as a means of writing the Mushaf Al-Qur’an in the time of the Prophet.
3. The Prophet Did Not Give The Order to Write Mushaf in One Book
The reason mushaf Al-Quran was not written on paper at the time of the Prophet saw is because at that time the Prophet almost never gave orders to friends to write mushaf in a bundle of books, even just hinted also not.
As for the beginning of the idea of writing mushaf in a bundle of books voiced by Umar ibn Khattab ra, but Abu Bakr Ash-Shiddiq who at that time became caliph refused rawly.
Mushaf Al-Quran was only recorded at the time of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, he homogenized the reading of the Qur’an with the era of homogenizing its writing. Only then did it be posted by re-copying the verses of the Qur’an that had been written in the time of Abu Bakr.
So that it becomes a more perfect mushaf that will be used as a standard for all Muslims as a source of reading and memorization and then reproduced and sent to the regions
