The name Al Qassam Brigades refers to Izz Ad Din Al Qassam, a preacher in Palestine. In 1930 he organized and founded Al Kaff Al Aswad (Black Hand), a militant organization opposed to British-French Zionism and government in the Levant.

The Secret Army

An official report released by the Australian Government says the Al Qassam Brigades were officially established to assist Hamas’ military capabilities.

Initially, the Brigade was organized in secret, consisting of boxed cells specializing in terrorist attacks, assassinations and kidnappings inside Israel.

Since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007 and took on a government role, the Al Qassam Brigades have evolved, at least in part, into more traditional military powers.

Brigades operate mainly in Gaza, with limited representation in the West Bank. According to the report, the goal of the Al Qassam Brigades is the unification of Israel and the Palestinian Territories under Islamic rule.

Given the differences in military resources between Israel and Hamas, the Al Qassam Brigades adopted guerrilla tactics in their efforts to defeat Israel.

Hamas Military Combat Prowess

The Al Qassam Brigades have disguised skills and are difficult to detect even by israel’s advanced tools.

Hamas is considered a formidable opponent for Israel because of its powerful air force, and its well-known intelligence network.

Israel could never annihilate Hamas because the armed branches of the organization operated very quietly.

Hamas was founded by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a Palestinian cleric.

He became an activist in the local branch of the Muslim Brotherhood after dedicating his early life to An Islamic scholarship in Cairo.

Sheikh Yassin established Hamas as the local political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in December 1987.

This followed the outbreak of the first intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israeli control of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.

Hamas later appeared at the forefront of armed resistance against Israel.

The Hamas-affiliated military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, has carried out anti-Israel attacks.

Hamas also manages a vast network of Dawa or service activities, mostly based in Gaza, that include charitable activities, schools, clinics, youth camps, fundraisers, and political activities, the U.S. State Department said.

The main base of Hamas operations is in the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave of 1.7 million Palestinians.
