Who Is Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi?

Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi is a prominent scholar and scholar who has published hundreds of books from various scientific fields. His books were translated into different languages, including Indonesian. Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradhawi is known as one of the most influential moderate Islamic figures in the past century.

For his contributions to the field of Islamic science, he has received eight international awards. Although known as a supporter of moderate Islam, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi had some views that were considered controversial, especially about jihad and the Jewish people.

1. Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi, Born in Egypt

Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi was born in Saft Turab, Gharbia, Egypt, on September 9, 1926. Since childhood, he has lost his father, so he was raised by his uncle. Born to a devout Muslim family, at the age of nine, Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradhawi had memorized the Quran.

After that, he entered the Institute of Religious Studies in Tanta and studied there for nine years. It was at that school that Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradhawi met with Hassan Al-Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood. The meeting left him in awe of Hassan Al-Banna, who later became one of the influential figures in his life.

From the Institute of Religious Studies, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi continued his studies at Al-Azhar University. In 1961, he moved to Qatar after several arrests for involvement with the Muslim Brotherhood, which was once considered a terrorist group by the Egyptian Government.

Since leaving his homeland in 1962, Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradhawi chose to settle in Qatar and only returned to Egypt until 2011. In Qatar, he built a career as an Islamic academic who often had the opportunity to support minority Muslim communities in Europe.

Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi is known as a thinker who presents a middle-ground Islam, which is a friendly and moderate Islam. His time was spent a lot for the Islamic world, teaching, speaking, and conveying Islamic issues in various international meetings and forums.

Although known as a supporter of moderate Islam, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi had some views that were considered controversial, especially about jihad and the Jewish people.

For one, he once expressed support for the operation of martyrdom (suicide bombings) in the name of God in Palestine and was known as an anti-zionist and Jewish figure. Because some of his views were considered too extreme, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi was once banned from entering several countries, one of which was in France.

In 2011, precisely after the Egyptian Revolution, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi returned to his hometown and had time to give a speech that was estimated to be witnessed by two million Egyptians.

In his speech, he demanded the release of political prisoners in Egyptian prisons, praised Christians who protected Muslims in Friday prayers, and called for an immediate restoration of civilian rule. He also referred to Hosni Mubarak as a pharaoh

3. Pass Away in 2022

Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradhawi died in Doha, Qatar, on September 26, 2022, aged 96. During his lifetime, he is estimated to have written about 125 book titles from various scientific fields.

Many of his books discuss jurisprudence, Islamic economics, sunah, akidah, philosophy, proselytizing and tarbiyah, the Islamic revival movement, literature, and many others.

Although not a few of his views have sparked controversy, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi is still recognized as one of the most influential Islamic scholars and scholars in the past century.
