What The Meaning of Zakat (Obligatory charity)

It’s one of the pillars of Islam. Zakat is prescribed to Muslims by issuing a number of property owned. Of course, there is a certain nisab or takara related to the property.

The purpose of Zakah  itself is based on the evidence of the Qur’an, namely QS At Taubah verse 103.

خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّ صَلَاتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَهُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

“Take alms out of their wealth, with it you cleanse and purify them and pray for them. Surely your prayer is peace for them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” QS At Tawbah: 103

The purpose of zakat as mentioned in this verse is to cleanse and purify oneself. However, zakat has a variety of meanings.

the root of the word zakat is zakah (in arabic word). The word has been interpreted by many scholars with various meanings.

1) At Tahuru

At Tahuru means cleansing or purifying. According to Abu Hasan Al Wahidi, the one who always gives zakat because of Allah, not for the praise of man, God will cleanse and purify both his soul and his property.

2) Al Baraktu (blessing)

That is, he who always pays zakah, his wealth will be blessed by God. This blessing will have an impact on the blessings of life because the property used is a clean property that has been cleaned of dirt, namely through zakat/zakah.

3. An Numuw

An Numuw means to grow and develop. Its meaning indicates that always pay zakat, its wealth will always grow and increase. The Prophet (pbuh) said:

“The wealth that is spent by the zakah is not diminished, but it increases and increases.”

4. As Shalalhu (clean or good)

That is, he who always pays Obligatory charity, his wealth is good, has no problem and will avoid problems.
